The sun is up early and it settles late in the day.
During the day the dragon flies make their rounds – pier to chair to tree to branch to pier… The humming birds run constantly back and forth draining your numerous feeders. The air is warm and there is endless laughter as the kids spend hours on the shore and in the water. Searching for frogs, chasing minnows, opening clams, catching rock bass off the dock…it never ends and has been virtually the same for generations.
Whether you live in the UP or Wisconsin, in the evening there’s the ritual drive for soft ice cream or sitting on the dock with coffee and hot chocolate. On the 4th of July you wonder if the spent fireworks will adversely affect the lake and you ponder how you ever existed without owning a cabin on a lake or a river or in the woods. You make plans to secure the trash cans – this year you’ll triumph over the raccoons.
Your house guests will say that they’ve slept better than at any other time in their lives – they insist there’s something about the air “Up North”.
You go to bed later, get up earlier and feel stronger. You remember what it’s like to be a kid. You sit in wonder at the awe of the North. Summer in the Northwoods is special. It’s that time that most people associate with being “Up North”.
